The short version
- Setuno sends text from a page only when you ask it to: when you click Define, Explain, Simpler, Example or Summarize. Never by itself, and never when you just hover over or select something.
- That text goes to OpenAI, which writes the answer. OpenAI does not train its models on it.
- Setuno keeps finished answers, not your text, for 30 days, so the same question asked again costs nothing.
- You don't need an account or an email to use Setuno. An email is optional.
- No ads, no analytics, no trackers, and nothing is sold.
Who is responsible
Setuno is made by Andrei Vîrtopeanu, an individual in Romania, who is responsible for the personal data described here. For any question about it, or to use any of your rights below, write to setuno.help@gmail.com.
What Setuno sends, and when
Setuno runs on the pages you visit so it can notice when you select text and show its buttons. Noticing happens inside your browser. Nothing leaves your computer until you click one of Setuno's buttons, and then only what that request needs:
| When you click | Setuno sends |
|---|---|
| Define | The word, and the sentence it appears in. |
| Explain | The text you selected, and the page's title. |
| Simpler or Example | The text you selected, and the explanation you were just shown. |
| Summarize | The main text of the page, as Setuno reads it with menus, ads and comments left out, and the page's title. |
With Define, Explain, Simpler and Example, Setuno also sends the language the page says it is written in, so the answer comes back in the language you are reading. If the page doesn't say, it sends your browser's language instead.
Setuno never sends the page's address, your browsing history, or anything from a page where you didn't click one of its buttons.
Where it goes
- Setuno's server, run on Supabase in Frankfurt, Germany. It checks your account and today's limit, then passes the request on.
- OpenAI, in the United States, writes the answer. Setuno asks OpenAI not to store the request. OpenAI does not use what it receives through its API to train its models, and keeps it for up to 30 days in logs it uses to detect abuse, unless the law requires longer. See OpenAI's privacy policy. Setuno's data processing agreement with OpenAI covers sending it to the United States: it is protected there by the EU's standard contractual clauses, or by an EU adequacy decision.
No other company receives the text you ask about.
What Setuno keeps on its server
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Finished answers, each stored under a fingerprint of its question. The fingerprint is a one-way code; the text you asked about is never stored, and the answer is not linked to your account. | So the same question, from anyone, is answered instantly and at no cost. | 30 days from when the answer was first written. |
| Your account: a random identifier, made the first time you ask for something. And your email address, only if you add one. | Daily limits belong to an account. An email lets you sign back in on another computer or after reinstalling. | As long as the account exists. |
| For each browser signed in to your account: the IP address and the browser's name and version it signed in from. | Kept by the sign-in service to protect the account. | Until that browser signs out, or the account is deleted. |
| How many definitions, explanations and summaries the account asked for each day. Only the numbers. | To apply the daily limits. | 30 days. |
| Technical logs: which feature was used, how many characters were sent, how long the answer took, and the first characters of the account's identifier. Not the text. As on any web server, the hosting service's own logs also record the IP address each request came from. | To find and fix faults. | 1 day. |
| If you buy Setuno Pro: Stripe's identifiers for your subscription and for you as its customer, the subscription's status, and when it renews or ends. | To know which accounts have Pro. | As long as the account exists. |
If you add an email address, Setuno uses it only to send you sign-in codes, and to reply if you write to Setuno. No newsletters and no marketing. The codes are sent from Setuno's Gmail account, so Google's email service handles your address on the way.
Payments
Setuno Pro is sold through Link, Stripe's merchant of record service. When you buy it, you pay on Stripe's own page: your card details go to Stripe and never reach Setuno. Setuno tells Stripe your account's identifier and your email address, so the payment is tied to the right account and your receipts go to the same address. Stripe handles the payment, the tax and your receipts under its own terms: see Stripe's privacy policy and Link's privacy policy.
What stays in your browser
Setuno keeps some things in your browser's storage for the extension, on your own computer: your recent answers, with the page title and address each one came from (the History screen); up to 200 saved answers, so asking the same thing twice is instant; today's counts; which plan you're on; and the sign-in for your account. None of this is sent anywhere.
You can delete your history and saved answers in Setuno's Settings, with "Clear history and saved answers". Removing the extension from Chrome deletes all of it.
Why Setuno may use this data
- To give you the answers you ask for, and Pro once you've paid for it (a contract with you).
- To apply daily limits and prevent abuse, which keeps Setuno affordable to run (legitimate interests).
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal data Setuno holds about you, to correct it, to have it deleted, to receive a copy of it, or to object to how it is used. Write to setuno.help@gmail.com from the address on your account. An account without an email isn't tied to your name; write anyway, and Setuno will help you find it. If you have Setuno Pro, deleting your account also means cancelling the subscription, and Setuno will make sure that happens.
You can also complain to a data protection authority. In Romania that is the Autoritatea Națională de Supraveghere a Prelucrării Datelor cu Caracter Personal (ANSPDCP).
Children
Setuno is not meant for children under 13, and does not knowingly collect their data.
Chrome Web Store
Setuno's use of information received from Chrome follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. The data is used only to provide Setuno's features, is never sold, and is never used for advertising.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with a new date at the top.
